Old Mauch Chunk Historic District
The borough's most distinctive architectural district — listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Victorian-era commercial and residential buildings from the 1820s-1890s coal and railroad peak: the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company and Switchback Railroad made Mauch Chunk one of the wealthiest towns in 19th-century Pennsylvania. The 'Switzerland of America' nickname dates from this era. Historic preservation overlay applies to exterior alterations but not to cash sales.
What we see most often
Multi-generation estate sales from coal, railroad, and canal families. Properties commonly held in single families 80-120 years since original construction. Heirs frequently out of state. Original mechanicals (coal boilers, knob-and-tube) universal. Historic district overlay means no pre-sale renovation is advisable without review board approval.
